OPAL Shelter is designed by OPAL Architecture which was founded in 2005 as the architecture half of a groundbreaking design/build company and then launched as an independent architecture firm in 2019. Based in Belfast, on the coast of Maine, we maintain an unwavering focus on design excellence while continually striving to achieve the highest standards of building performance and occupant comfort and well-being.
OPAL Shelter is powered by NotchSB, a Belfast, Maine based company specializing in a systems-driven, highly optimized approach to panelized mass timber construction. NotchSB fabricates precision engineered Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) wall and roof assemblies that are all-wood, fully recyclable, insulated with natural TimberHP wood fiber insulation for homes that are built to high performance energy standards. Each panelized component is produced in NotchSB’s automated offsite facility to minimize waste, improve quality, and support a faster, more predictable building process. TimberHP by GO Lab, a privately-held, building products company, was founded in 2017 with one purpose—to manufacture high-performance, wood fiber insulation for the first time in North America. Their boards, batts and loose fill, building on wood fiber’s two-decade legacy of proven market success in Europe, offer best-in-class insulation solutions—safe, cost competitive, sustainable. TimberHP is a value-added, innovative product line for Maine’s new forest economy.
